A relay from the source of the Thames to the estuary - staged for the first time in 2013 - is to be repeated this summer.

The relay involved volunteers carrying a token bottle of spring water by foot, by swimming, by boats of all types on different reaches of the river.

The event forms part of the Mayor's Thames Festival which is being extended to a full month this year. Previously focussed on the Tideway in Central London, organisers are endeavouring to extend the festival further along the river and include more Thames events..

This week clubs and individuals who took part last year are being given the opportunity to join the relay again. It will be held during the last two weeks of August prior to the festival in September.

The festival's Jon Cooke said: "As last year the first section will be completed by walkers and then each section (either lock to lock or an entire day) by small or large groups of river users from kayaks to classic boats to swimmers, sailing clubs and rowers. "
